How Do I Know if My Bike Chain Needs Replacement?

A few clear signs indicate your bike chain needs replacing. Use a chain wear gauge or measure the chain; if it has stretched beyond 0.75% elongation, it’s time for a new one. Watch for skipping gears, slipping under pressure, or difficulty shifting smoothly. Visible rust, stiff links, or excessive grime that won’t clean off are also warning signs. A worn chain wears down your cassette and chainrings faster, leading to costly repairs. As a rule, replace it every 3,000 to 5,000 km depending on riding conditions. Regular checks save money.
