Your priority is to reduce collision risk and keep everyone visible and protected until professional help reaches you.
What to do now
- Indicate early and move to the safest shoulder/edge area; stop as far from traffic as practical.
- Switch on hazard lights immediately; keep headlights on in low visibility.
- If safe, exit the vehicle on the side away from traffic and wait behind a barrier or on higher ground.
- Call road side assistance with your exact direction of travel and the nearest landmark/exit.
What NOT to do
- Do not stand behind the vehicle or between vehicles on the shoulder.
- Do not place warning devices if it requires walking in a live lane or near fast traffic.
- Do not attempt to push-start or work under the bonnet on a high-speed road.
When to call Crossroads Helpline
Call if you are stopped on a highway/expressway, visibility is poor, traffic is fast, or you suspect the vehicle is unsafe to drive. If the vehicle cannot be moved to a safe spot, request towing coordination.
