What should I do while waiting for road side assistance?

Crossroads Helpline
Stay visible, stay protected from traffic, and minimise time spent exposed on the road edge.
What to do now
- Keep hazard lights on; use parking lights/headlights if visibility is poor.
- Stand in a safe zone away from the carriageway; if available, wait behind a crash barrier.
- Keep your phone available; answer unknown numbers in case the responder calls.
- Monitor for changing risk (rain, fog, heavy vehicles); if conditions worsen, move to a safer waiting location.
What NOT to do
- Do not sit in the vehicle on a narrow shoulder with fast traffic if a safer place exists.
- Do not walk along the highway looking for help; it increases crash risk.
- Do not attempt roadside repairs that place you in traffic or require jacking the vehicle in an exposed spot.
When to call Crossroads Helpline
Call if you’re unsure whether the location is safe, if you cannot clearly describe where you are, or if the situation changes (smoke, leak, worsening weather, or near-miss incidents).
